Italy's population shrinks to lowest since 2007

Its demographic profile presents a big challenge for Italy’s economic and fiscal prospects. The country trails behind only Japan in having the largest number of people aged 65 and over. This means that a smaller proportion of the population, those of working age, need to produce output and fiscal revenues to pay for rising government spending.
