Newletter #141 Happy Christmas

John Bateson

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU AND YOURS

My poor attempt at a Christmas tree is more than it seems This is in fact a Population Pyramid. In this case for the City of Manchester, in 2021

If you have followed my Newsletters then the shape will surprise you. The population under 19 is grossly under represented. Above that is a normal “pyramid”. Even that is surprising. Around the world most pyramids are becoming columns. The dynamics are clearly very different.

It is driven by the model of life in modern UK cities. We come to the cities to go to university. We get a job. We find a partner and eventually around the age of 30 have a child. At that point we need more space and increasingly move out of the city looking for cheaper property. We never return and as we age may move further and further away.

If you have a spare mental moment over Christams you might think about the policy and commercial implications of such a pyramid. What does the health care problem look like? Education? Who are the old that remain?

Not as amusing as a Suduko but still good mental exercise!
